The Hoosier Link Experience

Campus Life

Residential Learning Community
Students are required to live in the residential learning community with other Hoosier Link students during their first year of program participation. In fact, we are so committed to the residential experience that even Hoosier Link students admitted to Indiana University Bloomington for the spring semester of their first year must continue to live in the Hoosier Link Learning Community. If a student is still in Hoosier Link their second year, first semester, they do not have to live in the residential community.

Campus Involvement
There are several student organizations available to students at both the Ivy Tech and IU campuses. However, some opportunities such as IU basketball tickets, IU Band, and IU Cheerleading are only available to enrolled IUB students.

Involvement in Greek Life
Students are strictly prohibited from participation in recruitment/pledge activities for sororities, fraternities or Greek interest groups at IU.

Health Services
Students have the opportunity to choose to use the IU Health Center while being in the HL program. They can also be served through Bloomington Hospital and local health agencies.

Working and Studying
Hoosier Link students are permitted to hold part-time campus/community jobs. However, we ask that they work no more than 15 hours per week.

Traveling Around Town
Students can use both the city and campus bus systems to travel to the Ivy Tech campus. However, based on previous HL student experience, having a car makes the commute between campuses much more convenient and allows additional flexibility in traveling.

Academics First

Getting Off to a Good Start
Students participating in Hoosier Link participate in a summer orientation, advising and registration program at Ivy Tech. Parents will also be invited to this program.

Enrolling in Classes
Students enroll full-time each semester at Ivy Tech. Although students can register for as many as 15 hours in the first semester, they are encouraged to take a course load that will give them the best opportunity for success.

Academic Skills Coursework
Based on performance on the Ivy Tech Bloomington placement tests, some students will be required to take academic skills-advancement coursework.

Please note that these courses are non-transferable and will not count toward the guaranteed transfer admission credit hours. However, these grades will be reviewed each semester in regard to the probation/dismissal process. Students may enroll in academic skills-advancement courses during Summer 2009, and they can take these courses at any Ivy Tech campus.

Distance Learning and Internet Courses
Because Hoosier Link staff members encourage engagement with faculty and believe it to be an important contributor to student success, Hoosier Link students may not enroll in distance learning or Internet courses.
